Hundreds of people grappling with Alzheimer’s in the present times are cared for by a family member, friend, or professional caretaker. However, the job of a caregiver is not simple and surely not limited to one person. It is a shared responsibility and no matter how well-prepared and motivated the caregivers are the task of caring for a person with Alzheimer’s can be daunting and overwhelming.
Tips for Providing Effective Care to Alzheimer’s Patients
1. People with Alzheimer’s struggle with daily routine and first and foremost a good caregiver needs to be empathetic towards that. They must be gentle, patient, and respectful towards the patient. Additionally, they need help with activities like bathing, dressing, and grooming, and establishing a routine for them to perform these tasks at the same time and same place can be very helpful. Setting up a reminder system for taking medications or doing the daily chores and remembering appointments encourages them to be more independent and feel confident.
2. Comfort is an important factor while caregiving for an Alzheimer’s patient. This means comfortable surroundings and comfortable and easy-to-wear clothes. The arrangement of the furniture should be spaced out so that the person finds it easy to move around freely. Keeping their favourite objects around them helps them feel more secure. Loose-fitting clothes with elastic bands and large zippers instead of laces or buttons can be used.
3. Communication can be challenging for people with Alzheimer’s as they have issues remembering things. This can make them agitated and anxious and interferes with their ability to recollect the right words while talking. It is natural for the caregiver to feel frustrated but it is important to understand that it is the condition that is causing the communication disruption and it’s not the person. The caregiver needs to speak calmly and assuredly to the person, try to understand their concerns, and use photos if there is a problem communicating with words. They also need to allow the person to be as much in charge of their life.
4. A person dealing with Alzheimer’s needs adequate nutrition to stay active and healthy. As the condition progresses, eating well may become a challenge, but the caregiver can ensure that the person is eating a healthy and balanced diet by serving a variety of simple foods and letting the person choose or involving them in cooking and making it a time for fun and bonding.
5. Alzheimer’s patients may lose interest and motivation to do things. The caregiver can make the daily activities interesting and exciting for them by adding music to the exercises, having short workouts or activity sessions that are easy, going for short walks, offering to do cleaning together, or simply dancing. People with the condition like people reading to them and spending quality time with them throughout the day.
6. Safety is another important consideration for the caregiver. While we discussed earlier that the house furniture must be rearranged for the comfort of the person, it should also be placed in a way that prevents falls and injuries. Bathrooms can be fitted with anti-skid mats and stairs must have hand rails. There must be sufficient lighting in the room so that the person can see clearly and doesn’t stumble over anything. Additionally, there should be safety plugs in the electrical sockets and latches on all the cabinet doors.
7. A caregiver’s job can be rewarding and challenging at the same time. It takes time, and effort and makes one feel exhausted and lonely. Hence the caregiver needs to eat and sleep well to keep them going. Me time is crucial, so they can take breaks and unwind often and regularly by asking someone else to fill in for some time while they rejuvenate themselves. Joining a caregiver’s support group can be very useful as it serves as a platform to share experiences and learn from each other to cope with the situation better. And last but not least, they shouldn’t feel guilty about making mistakes. They must accept that they are humans and it is natural to err.
