The Latest Covid Surge- What Precautions To Take

It’s back. The virus that changed our lives forever. There were 275 cases of COVID-19 actively reported in India as of May 25, 2025. While most cases are not very severe, the discovery of new variants such as JN.1, NB.1.8.1, and LF.7 requires us to keep vigilant.

Both Kerala, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu have confirmed cases of the JN.1 variant, a subvariant of Omicron. It’s true that these variants are more likely to spread, but the evidence so far suggests they are not especially severe.

India’s Health Ministry has announced that it has reviewed the situation to assess risks and said that “it remains alert and proactive, ensuring readiness to protect public health as the situation evolves”

The LP.8.1 and XEC are the most common strains of COVID-19 that are widely circulating as of March 2025. According to the CDC, these two variants make up 73% of new COVID-19 cases. The previous omicron variants, including KP.3.1.1, MC.10.1, and LF.7, are still circulating, just in smaller quantities.

The symptoms of the new Covid variant

Although the new variant symptoms are much like those of the old strains, the illness they cause might be milder because people have become immune from their vaccines and have had the virus before.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaccination is the best way to stop the disease from becoming severe in those at high risk. Written in this group are the elderly, the immuno-compromised, and those with chronic health conditions.

Symptoms are:

-Congestion

-Cough

-Diarrhea

-Fatigue

-Fever and chills

-Headaches

-Loss of taste or smell

-Muscle soreness and aches

-Nausea

-Shortness of breath

-Sore throat

-Vomiting

Which important measures should be taken?

  • Though many areas no longer require masks, you should still put one on when in a crowded or enclosed space.
  • Handwashing often with soap or hand sanitizer is very important at all times.
  • Get the COVID-19 shots as they are suggested by the health authorities.
  • Notice symptoms, especially fever, cough, and tiredness. See a doctor if you still have the symptoms.
  • People most at risk such as the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with other health issues, should receive extra attention.
  • Limit trips to places where the number of cases is high unless you have to go.

How the healthcare community is stepping up

India’s healthcare sector is responding with a wide range of measures as COVID-19 cases continue to rise. Authorities have confirmed that everything related to testing, medicine, and healthcare settings is currently in place. Hospitals are being required to provide enough beds, oxygen, and other important resources.

  • INSACOG(a Forum set up under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare by the Government of India on 30 December 2020, to study and monitor genome sequencing and virus variation of circulating strains of COVID-19 in India) is currently using genome sequencing to watch for new variants. More RT-PCR tests are being conducted in sensitive regions and at the airports, authorities are participating in random sampling.
  • COVID wards are opening up again and reviewing supply stocks for oxygen and ventilators along with practice drills to be ready for emergencies.
  • Authorities are making sure that enough vaccines, especially booster shots and crucial medicines are present at all places.
  • Campaigns conducted by the government provide rural communities with information on how to stay careful, get vaccinated, and disprove rumors about COVID-19.
  • Caregivers are acquiring training, and receiving mental health therapy and their employers are delivering medical services to the most remote areas with mobile units.

Although we are not alarmed by the expected rise now, it demonstrates the pandemic is still with us. If we stick to the necessary precautions based on updates from officials at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, we can all work to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
